Senior Dog Wellness Checklist

Early arthritis hides as 'slowing down'

Reluctance to jump into the car, hesitation on stairs, stiffness after rest, and a shortened stride are pain signals long before a limp appears. Pain relief works best when started early.

Adjust movement, do not remove it

Two or three short walks beat one long one, and soft, level ground is kinder than gravel or sand. Controlled sniffing walks tire an older dog mentally without straining joints.

  • Runners and rugs over slippery floors
  • Raised bowls and a thick orthopaedic bed out of draughts
  • Nails kept short , long nails change how a dog stands

Vet visits and weight

Twice-yearly exams with bloodwork catch kidney, thyroid and dental disease while they are still manageable. Keeping a senior dog lean is the most effective joint treatment there is.

Caring for a senior dog

Aging joints and fading senses call for a few simple adjustments: non-slip mats, ramps for furniture and cars, and shorter, gentler walks. Watch for changes in appetite, mobility and sleep , they're often the first signs of pain.

Orthopaedic beds, ramps and joint supplements are available from Elite Pet Co with nationwide shipping.
